Philippines: An Amazing Country to Visit Featured

In the past 7 years, I have always been sharing how my family and I faced the challenges that we have encountered here in Canada and the advantages (and disadvantages) of settling down here.  Though I have some articles that I wrote pertaining to my fellow Filipinos, I have never really talked about Philippines, the land where I came from.

Because June 12th is one of the most significant dates in the Philippine history (it marks as our country’s independence from Spanish rule), I would like to take this opportunity to become patriotic and share why I am proud of my country.  Not that I am going to discuss about Philippine history (I’d rather not talk about this, I don’t think I even got outstanding grades in my history subjects when I was still in school) but I want to share how beautiful my home country is…

The Philippines, officially known, as the Republic of the Philippine is an archipelago situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It is consists of 7,107 islands categorized under 3 main geographical divisions as Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao divided in 18 regions with 82 provinces.

More often than not, when we speak of places, countries, in this case, we tend to talk about what makes it famous… we try to determine the culture, food or its tourism. Philippines is known for a lot of things, but if you will ask me, one of the best things that I take pride about my home country is its travel and tourism.

There are times that when I talk to some of my non-Filipino colleagues and tell them about Philippines’ popular tourist destinations, I am quite disappointed to see that they are surprised to know that Philippines is one of the best countries to travel. The countries rich biodiversity is one of the main tourist destinations and just like other Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos, our country is also amazing!

As an archipelago, my country boasts of its beautiful beaches, mountains, islands, caves and rock formations.  Among the top tourist attractions of the Philippines are its white sand beaches, diving spots, underground rivers, and amazing waterfalls, perfectly shaped volcanoes or hills as well as the large shopping malls.

Manila, the country’s capital city is home for architecture and historic attractions and is a very well known shopping hub of the country and it has been named as one of the best shopping destinations in Asia. Of the best places to visit when in Manila are the walled city of Intramuros, National Museum, Rizal Park, National Museum, Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Manila Ocean Park, and the beautiful churches such as San Agustin Church, San Sebastian Church and Manila Cathedral. And of the top largest malls in the world, three of them are found in the Philippines – the Mall of Asia, SM Megamall and SM North EDSA.

The 3 geographical divisions of Philippines also have their own tourist attractions that they can be proud of.  Though, Manila is located in Luzon, hence it is considered the political and economic center of the Philippines, Luzon has beautiful must-see places in the provinces of Baguio, Bicol Region, Zambales, Ilocos Region, Batanes and Palawan.

Visayas, the central island group of Philippines, is the heart of the country’s biodiversity. Among the top tourist destination in Visayas are Boracay, Cebu City, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Guimaras and Iloilo.

Mindanao, the country’s southernmost island is known for its mountain ranges; it is one of the best climbing destinations in the Philippines. Among the best provinces to visit are Davao City, Zamboanga City, Cotabato, Butuan, Siargao and Cagayan de Oro.

Even if I spent more than 25 years of my life in the Philippines, I have only visited very few of these beautiful tourist destinations and I would love to visit most of these places when I have the chance to travel back to my home country. Indeed, it’s more fun in the Philippines!
