– The Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
In line with the concerted effort of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to reduce processing time for family reunification, the Government of Canada has announced that starting December 7, 2016 the processing times of spousal application will be reduced. Said improvement in processing time is expected to benefit more applicants, IRCC plans to admit 64 000 spouses and dependants in 2017 which is well above the average of 47,000 compared in the past decade.
At present the average processing time for this application is 12 month while complex cases may take longer than the normal processing time. Applicants who already filed an application will not have to wait an additional 12 months to have them finalized. IRCC will continue to process applications in the order they have been received. Most families who have been waiting should have a decision on their sponsorship application no later than the end of December 2017.
The application kit for new sponsors has will be redesigned to be simpler and easier to understand and will be available on December 15, 2016.
